PRIMARY LANDSCAPE  2025

Catalogue text

“It’s been over ten years since our first sell-out collaboration, back in an open-sided tin barn in North Norfolk where Harry’s minimal, eloquent line drawings captured the essence of our precarious coastline. Since then Harry’s style has evolved at speed, partly in response to this ever changing landscape, but mostly from his passion for experimenting with paint on paper, texture and medium. The once monochrome, graphite and ink lines quickly grew into colourful darts of watercolour over pencil, via the three dimensional reliefs, which in turn have expanded into vast, vivid watercolour brushstrokes floating over pastel coloured washes on swathes of tactile Japanese kozuke papers. Punctuated with solid swirls and emblematic motifs, suns and circles, your eye is led deep into the realms of landscape.
The key development with this latest series of watercolours is the introduction of collage. Harry has stripped back these works to their core, dismantling their ‘primary’ forces before rebuilding – mostly through collage – these powerful, expressive landscapes. They become like a trompe l’oeil, figuring out which brushworks are inherent and which have been applied; both intrinsically entwined, they mirror the content of the paintings: what is present, and what was once there, blurring reality with illusion.”
