QUIET GROUND

2025

‘This is the landscape where the Thames draws nearer to the City of London, curving around the lush expanse of Richmond Park. It marks the final pastoral moment before the imposing presence of concrete and stone takes over, stretching toward the sea. Continuing a theme he has explored for years, Harry Cory Wright presents four exquisite views of this iconic landscape—luminous morning and evening scenes that echo the timeless elegance of early 19th-century master paintings of the Thames.’

“Yet, beneath the softness of the light, modern elements subtly disrupt the serene order once captured by masters like Sir Joshua Reynolds and J.M.W. Turner. In The Shard from Richmond Park, Cory Wright offers one of his signature early morning encounters. The sunrise filters through the park’s summer foliage on the left, while dew glistens along the path to the right. On the horizon, though distant, the Shard stands unmistakably at centre stage, its lights still glowing from the night. Yet, dominating the foreground is the dead trunk of one of Richmond Park’s ancient oak trees, its massive limbs scattered and lifeless. A stark reminder that, in time, all things must fall.”
