Treasure Hunt. Titchwell Manor. Norfolk

New Year 24/25

This is the page that tells you about the treasure Hunt made for Titchwell Manor based on the painting made for the lobby of the hotel, for Boxing Day 2024/25

NB. The ring has now been found. 

The clue with the symbols here was the one and only clue. It was posted on instagram at 10am on Boxing Day as a 10 second ‘reel’ with the accompanying sound track of the intro to ‘There’s Something Happening Here’ by Buffalo Springfield.

Below the symbol were these four lines;

A few feet above one,
Moved by another
Not seen the third for some years
The fourth comes and goes

The ring is made by Madeliene Spencer Jewellery for the purpose of this treasure hunt. Her work is so good... rooted in this ancient but active landscape.

Titchwell Manor commissioned this work in 2022. It depicts multiple elements of the landscape out in front of Titchwell Manor and explores ideas of time and place. The two outer panels roughly represent the view out to the creeks while the central panel looks back to the hotel itself. The clues are also laid out within the picture itself. 

The Solution(s)

I have put these one by one so you can ‘find’ the place by degrees.

1. The 4 lines, and indeed the symbols refer to the four elements, earth, air, fire and water.The place where the ring is hidden has all four elements in close proximity. 

2. The ring was hidden few feet above the earth, moved gently by the air, not seen fire for some time, and where the sea comes and goes. 

3. The illustration echos the Zen representation of The Universe, everything... all the elements. 

4. The soundtrack of For What its Worth is an anti war song that starts with the suspicious line... ‘There’s something happenin’ here,  This refers to the wartime square shaped gun emplacement or ‘pill box, that is out on the marsh, by the creek. 

5. In the corner of the pill box there is a crude but effective fireplace made by a line of bricks built across the corner of two walls that makes for a low hearth... and a triangular chimney.

6. The ring was hidden up the chimney, hanging on a small hook.

7. As per the illustration.... the ring therefore  was inside the triangle, inside the square.
