GBS Fine Art, Somerset.
Summer 2025

For more than two decades, Harry Cory Wright has steadily cemented a significant position in the pantheon of landscape photography. Several solo exhibitions at Eleven Fine Art have garnered the praise of critics and collectors alike; Rachel Campbell-Johnston noted that: “These are not images to stand back and stare at. They are landscapes to step into. They ground you as you look.”

To date his work has largely focused on the British countryside and especially Norfolk where he lives, with its particular vistas looking north across sandflats and sea to sky. In the course of 2024, a dialogue between Harry and GBS Fine Art (with the blessing of his long-time dealer Eleven) led to a trip to Nantucket, one of the easternmost points of the continental US. Here he was implicitly drawn to look east back towards Europe. While it may be a natural instinct to face the rising sun, on a metaphysical level it harnessed the centuries of human movement back and forth across the Atlantic Ocean, from the Vikings and later the Portuguese in their quest for cod, to the early settlers with their own quest for some freedom of conscience and religious practice, to the great whaling fleets of the nineteenth century.

Cory Wright has always used a large format (8”” x 10”) analogue plate camera; “…it has an almost magical capacity to record much more than I can see.” And while the resulting detail is astonishing, it equally seems to have captured some sense of the innate nostalgia experienced by generations of sailors and travellers between the two continents. Moreover, it lends itself to presentation at scale, enabling the viewer to do as suggested by Cambell- Johnston, to literally step into the image and become as one with the landscape.

PRIMARY. The first glimpse of something before you have worked it out, before you know it, before the words, before the abstraction even, which is after all, when you dismantle it… after. Primary colours.&nbsp;Primary as in the simplicity. Primary School even. The basics of language of landscape identifying the primary forces of mass, form, perspective, colour, shade, circumstance and balance in space.
Read Davina Barber’s Catalogue text here.<img width="1200" height="942" width_o="1200" height_o="942" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/06ad6cdb411aec37be20bff9ffce3c629b70f1d73cd5405ca49caf0cd0e3abca/Force-of-Sunlight.jpg" data-mid="231748507" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/06ad6cdb411aec37be20bff9ffce3c629b70f1d73cd5405ca49caf0cd0e3abca/Force-of-Sunlight.jpg" />Force of Sunlight, 2025

For a while now I have been working equally in both photography and abstract applied work. Always in the realm of landscape I am interested in the literal, realistic nature of the large format colour photograph against the often wordless capacity of the abstract paintings and reliefs. In this series 'Primary Landscape' I concentrated of the absolute basics of what might make up our British Isles landscape experience.
For the most part I have relied on a long term knowledge of this once estuarine landscape where I live in East Anglia. More and more I rely on a particular place just outside of our village where the ruins of a friary sit on one shore of what was once a tidal lagoon, and a church that sits on the other.
These two entities and all the rich unknowable history of their interaction are fertile ground from which to conjure up aspects of landscape both real and imagined.

The marks are all simple of course and though I have no need to identify any of them particularly, you will see glimpses of the sea, rivers, valleys, a church or two, the sky, reflections, fields, hedges and planetary action.
These are the basics.

	PRIMARY LANDSCAPE&nbsp; 2025

Catalogue text
“It’s been over ten years since our first sell-out collaboration, back in an open-sided tin barn in North Norfolk where Harry’s minimal, eloquent line drawings captured the essence of our precarious coastline. Since then Harry’s style has evolved at speed, partly in response to this ever changing landscape, but mostly from his passion for experimenting with paint on paper, texture and medium. The once monochrome, graphite and ink lines quickly grew into colourful darts of watercolour over pencil, via the three dimensional reliefs, which in turn have expanded into vast, vivid watercolour brushstrokes floating over pastel coloured washes on swathes of tactile Japanese kozuke papers. Punctuated with solid swirls and emblematic motifs, suns and circles, your eye is led deep into the realms of landscape. The key development with this latest series of watercolours is the introduction of collage. Harry has stripped back these works to their core, dismantling their ‘primary’ forces before rebuilding – mostly through collage – these powerful, expressive landscapes. They become like a trompe l’oeil, figuring out which brushworks are inherent and which have been applied; both intrinsically entwined, they mirror the content of the paintings: what is present, and what was once there, blurring reality with illusion.”Davina Barber. I took the 10 x 8 inch camera to photograph the Atlantic Ocean from Nantucket USA at sunrise in November 2024. This picture here was taken at sunrise on 5th November, the morning of the US election.&nbsp;

Please get in touch with Giles Baker Smith or Tracey Grace at GBS Fine Art for more details.&nbsp;https://www.gbsfineart.com/

	Pictures of Pairs
March ‘24
You may have seen the albums Vision of an Estuary (here on the site) and this is an extension of the idea where a photograph sits beside a watercolour or perhaps a drawing beside a relief. As you can see there is a slight angle to the two pictures that is intended to echo the double page spread of a book... a gutter. The idea is that one starts a dialogue with the other. What interests me is how one becomes the ‘caption’ to the other and for some reason this takes away the need for things like location and general info about either one or the other. The eye just wants to find some common ground or perhaps even the opposite. &nbsp;There is more about this on the Visision of an Estuary page. This is an ongoing and developing idea this and I will continue to pursue. But wordlessness is a strong factor. These two images together work as a picture on the wall, but is perhaps stronger in book format where the relationshiop is also to do with the pages before and after. On the wall there is a singleular intensity to the that particular framed pair. I will update here when I get to the next stage.&nbsp;

	The Goose Beck. An Occasional Stream through our Village
Spring ‘24
There is a stream that is currently running right through Burnham Market where we live. It’s called the Goose Beck which is thought to have come from ‘Ghost Beck’ on account of the way it flows and then drys up, independent of local rain. We all think it has a life of it’s own… certainly at night. Here it is lit by a full moon.
Burnham Market is notorious for various negaitive things about visitors but of course there is masses more to it all... layers of good stuff too. But this phenomenon of the stream is the business end of what makes it a unique place to be.. and nicely way way out of our control... we hope.&nbsp;

There is a slow motion video of the moonlight on the water on my @harrycorywright instagram page&nbsp;
