PRIMARY. The first glimpse of something before you have worked it out, before you know it, before the words, before the abstraction even, which is after all, when you dismantle it… after. Primary colours. Primary as in the simplicity. Primary School even. The basics of language of landscape identifying the primary forces of mass, form, perspective, colour, shade, circumstance and balance in space.

Force of Sunlight, 2025

For a while now I have been working equally in both photography and abstract applied work. Always in the realm of landscape I am interested in the literal, realistic nature of the large format colour photograph against the often wordless capacity of the abstract paintings and reliefs. In this series 'Primary Landscape' I concentrated of the absolute basics of what might make up our British Isles landscape experience.

For the most part I have relied on a long term knowledge of this once estuarine landscape where I live in East Anglia. More and more I rely on a particular place just outside of our village where the ruins of a friary sit on one shore of what was once a tidal lagoon, and a church that sits on the other.

These two entities and all the rich unknowable history of their interaction are fertile ground from which to conjure up aspects of landscape both real and imagined.

The Moon’s Orbit, 2025

The marks are all simple of course and though I have no need to identify any of them particularly, you will see glimpses of the sea, rivers, valleys, a church or two, the sky, reflections, fields, hedges and planetary action.

These are the basics.

This is Primary Landscape.
