THE GOLDEN SHED

Opens June 12th 2026

By appointment, booking is now open.

The Golden Shed website is here

The Golden Shed is an art installation set in the courtyard at Longlands, Holkham, Norfolk, England.
Six hundred small, simple, painted wooden pieces are laid out randomly on three shelves inside the shed.

Each piece reflects some aspect of the local landscape and visitors are encouraged to explore what happens when they arrange a selection of pieces together on one of several different coloured boards provided; two, three or more pieces at the same time.

You can book an hour, either for yourself or for up to six where you play with the pieces, make your own artwork, and contemplate the natural world outside.

You will have the space to yourself for an hour.

Each unit is unique, of varying colour and tone, and represents some visual aspect of the local estuary landscape. Some of the pieces are also photographs.

When you have finished your piece, you can place it in the photography booth that sits beside you inside the shed and, by pressing the button, you take a picture of the work which is sent immediately to the studio just beside. At the end of your session an assistant will show you the different works you have made and you can choose whether to have any made into a print to take away.

The prints are made on a fine Japanese paper that particularly suits this work. You can have them made to A4 or A3 size and you can ask Harry construct the actual piece you have made as a physical relief work, framed. These will take little longer to make and are not available to take away with you.

Rather like when we go for a walk, we might feel immersed in a landscape, allowing ourselves to entertain a variety of thoughts, patterns and ideas that drift in and out of our conciousness. It is the same inside the shed, where each piece has the capacity to take you on a slight shift of direction, a journey within a journey.

Here you can play your own game as you look at the relationships between different small manifestations of landscape and find ways that the arrangements you create explore personal experiences of being in the estuary.

It is a peaceful process, meditative and engaging. A hour long soundtrack has been created by the artist Alex Howard, that takes you on a loose journey around the local landscape; delicate references to places, colours, textures and experiences.

Many thanks to Crane Garden Buildings who collaborate with this project and construct the exhibition spaces.

The Golden Shed was previously at The Stapleford Granary in Cambridge July and August 2025 under the title ‘600 Pieces of Landscape. Chalk Stream’. It was then painted orange.
